In 1975, Bob returned to the Corps of Engineers and worked in the Construction Branch of the Wilmington District where he eventually became its chief. In 1982, he became chief of the Operations Branch, responsible for a staff of 100 whom operated and maintained dredges, a marine construction vessel, locks, dams, drawbridges, hydropower plants and associated-maintenance facilities.
In 1989, Bob left the Corps of Engineers and became a partner in and manager of a seven-person civil-construction firm called M & A Construction Co., Inc. in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The company has grown to 45 people and is now known as Thomson & Co., Inc. Civil Contractors. Thomson does civil-construction work for local developers, governments and industries.
